Concert Impromptissimo #4 with Hans Leeuw, Diemo Schwarz, Giani Caserotto, Tiasci, Paris

Three electro-acoustic instrumentists meet for a one-time encouter at cozy Tiasci with its delicious indian-inspired buffet and fabulous Ti-Punchs.
First part: 2 duos (Leeuw/Schwarz, Leeuw/Caserotto), second part: trio Leeuw/Caserotto/Schwarz.

Ircam Forum member Hans Leeuw's Electrumpet is a hybrid electroacoustic instrument intimately combining trumpet playing and intuitive control of digital sound processing. It won the 2013 Margareth Guthman competition of the world's most innovative musical instrument. Leeuw and Schwarz's duo was winner of the Ircam-Live call for performances in 2012.
Giani Caserotto's electric guitar playing intimately combines the virtuosity on the strings with mastery of analog/digital effects pedals.
Diemo Schwarz's CataRT software is fed by the sound happening during the performance, and brings them back to life through physical gestural controllers, reconquering the expressiveness lost in most laptop performances.

Hans Leeuw integrates his own live sound output from the trumpet with the sensor controls that he manipulates at the same time. Not as a static effect but as a true integral part of making the sound. The resulting expressiveness is a blend between the expressiveness as a player and the expressive use of the controls. For that purpose the sensor controls are designed in a special way. Partly doubling the trumpet’s normal controls (mouthpiece, valves and playing the mute) but also exploiting fingers that a trumpet player normally doesn't use by tactile sensors on the right spots.

Giani Caserotto, est guitariste, compositeur et improvisateur, et travaille sur les rapports entre écriture et improvisation, musiques savantes et populaires. Titulaire de 5 premiers prix du Conservatoire de Paris (CNSMDP) en guitare, improvisation générative, harmonie, contrepoint, écriture XXème siècle, il y étudie aussi l’orchestration et la musique indienne. Il a étudié la composition avec Jean-Yves Bosseur et a mené sous sa direction en travail de recherche sur les formes ouvertes. Il a également obtenu une licence de musicologie à l’université Bordeaux III. 

Il se produit en France et en Europe (Italie, Espagne, Sardaigne, Allemagne, Suisse, Hongrie…) en soliste et au sein de plusieurs formations, aussi bien en musique contemporaine (ensemble Le Balcon), rock (Cabaret Contemporain, FER, London Jack), musique traditionnelle (Pascal Lefeuvre), musiques improvisées (ONCEIM, Etienne Rolin, Vincent Lê Quang). Il compose fréquemment des musiques de film et de pièces chorégraphiques. Ses recherches sur les rapports entre écriture et improvisation l’ont mené à travailler avec des improvisateurs et des plasticiens pour la conception de Zeitlinie, création mêlant musique, formes programmées et dispositif scénique (zeitlinie.net).

Diemo Schwarz's live corpus-based concatenative synthesis permits a new approach to improvisation, where sound from an instrument is recontextualised by the interactive, gesture-controlled software CataRT. The performer re-combines the sounds recorded live from the trumpet into new harmonic, melodic and timbral structures, simultaneously proposing novel combinations and evolutions of the source material.
The metaphor is here an explorative navigation through the ever-changing sonic landscape of the corpus being built-up solely from live recording, where expressivity is re-conquered by the software player using gestural controllers such as a pressure-sensitive xy-pad, accelerometers, and piezo pickups on various surfaces that allow to hit, scratch, and strum the corpus of sound, exploiting all its nuances.
In a poetic manner, the discourse of the instrument player can be resculptured in the instant by the software player, making the unpredictability of the musical material an integral part of the live performance.
