Sound design – an artistic / scienfic discipline in its own right

As well as design, sound design can be seen as a « discipline of study in its own right » (Archer, 1979) that is positionned somewhere between art and science. Among others, the study of this specific discipline addresses the issue of the status and the role of the sound designer, and furthermore the extended issue of the way sound design projects articulate artistic know-how and scientific knowledge.

Assuming that sound design could be understood as making design with sound, the sound design discipline needs to develop specific tools and methods to deal with that specific matter of design, that is sound.
