➡️ This presentation is part of IRCAM Forum Workshops Paris / Enghien-les-Bains March 2026
This demonstration presents Zap Bain's artistic research on real-time EEG brainwave control of spatial audio systems for auditory neurofeedback and generative music performance. Building on her October 2025 demonstration at Monom Studios' 72-speaker 4DSOUND system at Funkhaus, this presentation showcases ambisonic work developed with SPAES using SPAT and boids algorithms. The live demo illustrates voluntary brainwave control of spatial audio objects through embodied cognition techniques including movement, neural asymmetry, vestibular system engangement and brainwave frequency ratios. The presentation integrates practical demonstration with theoretical frameworks, examining her cyber-feminist methodology and her groundbreaking voluntary alpha-theta-gamma control achieved through sustained practice.
Zap Bain is a musician, sound artist/engineer and critical theorist with an artistic research focus on auditory neurofeedback, sound-based biomimicry and spatial audio. She is completing her MA thesis at UdK Berlin Sound Studies and Sonic Arts on a spatial audio neurofeedback system. Her work is presented as live EEG brainwave-modulated hardware performances that range from experimental pop-music to generative sound art and interactive sound installations.
