"Musikmaschine" by Astrid Drechsler

This students project of FH JOANNEUM combines traditional instruments such as the zither, dulcimer with contemporary electronic music and a easy to understand public interface. It was developed for the Cultural Capital of Heritage 2024 in Austria.

Biography

Musikmaschine Bad Ischl

The sound characteristics of instruments from the region Salzkammergut are paired with new and unusual styles of playing. First of all, the installation “Musikmaschine” deals with the ma- terials of traditional instruments such as wood, metal, and stone. Using coding, electromechanical, and digital elements, these materials be- come sound generators. Thus, new materialities and synergies between the characteristics of regional instruments and the style of electronic music evolve. Visitors can operate the “Musikmaschine” via an inter- face. They can create short audio compositions and as a result build a bridge between tradition and innovation. For this purpose, seven different sound generators were developed and built for the "Mus- ikmaschine" using old used and partly broken instruments. Controlled by microcontrollers, solenoids and exciters stimulate the material and produce sounds.

During the IRCAM Forum Workshops, there will also be a performance from students of FH JOANNEUM with the machine . They work with the materials of the traditional instruments, which are ar- ranged into beats and combine them with atmospheric soundscapes and multi-layered synthesizer sounds.
