As well as design, sound design can be seen as a « discipline of study in its own right » (Archer, 1979) that is positionned somewhere between art and science. Among others, the study of this specific discipline addresses the issue of the status and the role of the sound designer, and furthermore the extended issue of the way sound design projects articulate artistic know-how and scientific knowledge.
The talk will present three emblematic sound design works – completed or in progress wihtin the Ircam STMS Lab Sound Perception & Design group – that would give different insignts on how the art/science articulation may be implemented and what it did – or will – produce in this particular context.
