Koral: Playing music collectively using smartphones as musical instruments by Frederic Bevilacqua, Charles-Edouard de Surville and Damien Barbaza

Presented by Frederic Bevilacqua, Charles-Edouard de Surville, Damien Barbaza

Developed by the Association Arts Convergences in partnership with Ircam (ISMM team), KORAL is an application for playing music intuitively and playfully in a group, turning smartphones into musical instruments. Simple and customizable gestures can trigger musical sounds and patterns that are automatically and harmoniously integrated into a collective music piece. This approach aims at stimulating creative expression and encouraging mutual listening and support.

Collective Music Interaction Using Network Technologies

We developed several flexible systems to design collective music interaction. These systems, based on web technologies and mobile phones, allow for the implementation of various interaction paradigms, from distributed listening systems with hundreds of mobile phones, to collective gesture-based sound control using the embedded smartphone motion sensors.
