This conference will explore the relationships between music and images and, more specifically, the concept of cine-concert.
A movie contains a large number of elements and is capable of both suggesting form and generating matter.
The musical form and its articulation can be defined by simple data such as the number and duration of the scenes that make up the movie, or by more complex data such as the editing, with its techniques and rhythm, the framing, the play of light and shadow, the composition of the shots, their architecture, their material, the acting, the atmosphere...
Another pillar of the movie's construction emerges through the script and its relationship with the narrative and its conventions: Unity of space - time - character concept - narrative pockets or abstraction and its visual implications.
The script will also define the psychological, dramatic, humorous or political content of the movie. All these elements, and many others, are likely to generate and suggest musical material and form.
The ways in which a composer can respond to a movie are just as rich and varied. Is it better to go against the director's grain to get a particular idea across ?
Is it not redundant in some parts to write music that ‘parallels’ the images ? Why does it work in some places and not in others ?
Given all this, can we keep our freedom and write music that is not purely functional, but that meets our most intimate needs as composers while maintaining a friendly relationship with the movie ?
