vssl – Performing with Sound as a Vessel by Xavier Bonfill

vssl is a performative sampler and granular synthesizer that enables real-time sound exploration through audio descriptor-based navigation. In this presentation, I will introduce my artistic approach to vssl as part of my (vessels) series, discussing its conceptual and technical foundations. The session will conclude with a live demonstration, showcasing vssl’s performative and exploratory capabilities.

Presented by Xavier Bonfill

vssl is a performative sampler and granular synthesizer that enables real-time sound exploration through audio descriptor-based navigation. Instead of traditional sample playback methods, vssl allows performers to dynamically search and manipulate sound libraries based on perceptual parameters like brightness, hardness, harmonicity, and height.

As a composer and artist, not strictly a developer or researcher, I approach this project as an intricate part of my creative process, focusing on the interplay between sound, technology, and performance. In this presentation, I will introduce my work and artistic background before diving into the conceptual and technical foundations of the instrument, its role in my ongoing series of works “(vessels)”, as well as a live demonstration of the instrument, showcasing its performative and exploratory capabilities.
