Biography

As an Indian-American musician primarily exposed to Western music theory, Nikita began studying Hindustani classical music to connect more deeply with her roots. Struggling to understand its theory and notation, she explored various tutorials and forums where musicians attempted to translate between Hindustani and Western music concepts. However, she found no comprehensive online or digital tools that effectively addressed this gap.

Hindustani and Western classical music exist in separate hemispheres, with minimal overlap in education. This lack of integration creates a learning barrier for musicians from both traditions, limiting their access to and understanding of each other’s theoretical frameworks and notation. Currently, no digital tools adequately bridge this divide.

In collaboration with Hindustani classically trained musicians, Nikita's research explores the use of XR technology to connect North Indian and Western classical musicians. Her ongoing project is an interactive installation that teaches users to play notes within an Indian raga—a melodic framework with specific ascending and descending scales—on a Western keyboard while displaying the equivalent Indian notation on screen. Using two MIDI keyboards connected to a sitar and grand piano, users create their own Indian-Western reactive musical artwork. By transforming music into a visual and auditory experience, the installation fosters cross-cultural understanding, bridging India and the West.
